Spring Fever and Beach-Time Fun!

Spring is busting out all over and soon the days will be warmer, the evenings longer and families will spend more time outdoors resuming activities placed on hiatus during the winter months. It’s time to get those old flower beds popping with color, wash the pollen off the house, spruce up that front porch and dust off the lawn mower. So what to do with little ones busting to get outdoors and explore the ever-changing world around them (or at least the back yard for now)?

I’ve tried taking my 23-month-old outside with me while I do a little yard work. We’ve even ventured on a walk without the stroller – once. I’ve found I spend more time chasing him than actually getting anything done. But that’s just it; I am getting something done - spending time with my son. Once I forgo any ideas of accomplishing actual work and just rest on the idea of spending time with my family everything else becomes trivial (even if the house looks vacant or that we just really don’t care about yard work, curb appeal or our neighbors). Hey, it’s all good.

It’s really the little things about my kids that give me the most pleasure. I look at my five-year-old at least once a day and think, how did she get so big, so fast? Where did the time go? For her fifth birthday I made her a scrapbook (www.mixbook.com) capturing moments of her life from the first ultrasound up until a few weeks before her birthday. I wanted her to have a special keepsake, something to hold onto when she’s older. I think it was more for me though, a way to recapture things I miss when she was a baby. She and I look at it from time to time.  I tell her stories about when she was a baby; she’s quick to tell me she’s heard them before and I’m boring her. Ah yes, five going on twelve. I can’t wait to work on her next book, good stuff.

So, what better time to make memories than on these warm spring days? There are so many fun projects to do, places to go and things to see. This weekend, as tempting as it may be to work outside, step away from the rake, shovel or lawn mower and do something together as a family. Heck, you might even find yourself at the beach!

  1. Uhu! Which reminds me that I need a vacation somewhere far from the city and far from the crowed…
