Post Labor Day: The Peace of the Beach

“Nobody on the road, nobody on the beach.
I feel it in the air, the summer’s out of reach.”
-Don Henley, Boys of Summer
When I hear this song I am automatically transported back to late 1984. I’m 11 years old and sitting in the passenger seat of my mother’s Volkswagen convertible, top down, riding down Highway 17. The streets are empty and there’s just a touch of Fall in the air. Labor Day has come and gone and once again, the beach is ours!
The sidewalks don’t quite roll up the way they used to after Labor Day along the Grand Strand, but still, it’s noticeably more quiet. School is back in session, so for most, the beach vacation season is over. The outdoor amusement parks and water parks shut down, some restaurants and stores even close, and we’re back to our small community for a bit. While it may not always be good for our pocketbooks, for us locals it can be a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the busy summer season. It means going out to eat and not having to wait, shorter check-out lines at the grocery store, not having to search too hard for a spot on the beach, and best of all, less traffic!
Over the years; however, travelers have caught on to our little secret. With a climate that stays mild pretty much all year long, Fall can be an especially wonderful time of year on the Grand Strand. Temperatures stay warm into October with lower humidity levels and cooler nights making conditions perfect for enjoying a nice ocean breeze. Another perk, rates go down making a beach trip more affordable.
Additionally, now that the Grand Strand is no longer just a seasonal destination, there is an abundance of festivals and special events in the off season for visitors (and locals alike) to enjoy along with the mild weather and reasonable rates. Plus, with it not being peak season, it’s a little quieter and less crowded as well.
If you’re looking to beat the crowds (and the heat) while enjoying the beach, Fall may be just the perfect season for you to visit the Grand Strand. Check our monthly events calendar at www.gardencityrealty.comfor the latest on festivals and special events happening in the area all year long. Find out what locals have known for years; Fall is fabulous on the Grand Strand!
