It is, in fact, a peanut in the shell, boiled in salty water. And it is delicious! This is a true southern staple, and has been consumed since the 1800's. Here's a little history about the boiled peanut:

Boiling peanuts has been a folk cultural practice in the south of the US since the 19th century, where they were originally called goober peas. In late August, when the peanut crops would come in, unsold and surplus peanuts would be prepared in a boiling, and extended families and neighbors would gather to share conversation and food. Like a fish fry, peanut boils have been organizing principles for social gatherings. Like okra, black-eyed peas, collard greens and pork barbecue, boiled peanuts are symbols of southern culture and cuisine.Flavorings such as ham hocks, hot sauce, Cajun seasonings or beer can be added to the boil.
The resulting food is a very soft peanut in the shell, invariably quite salty. The softened peanuts are easy to open. Often small, immature peanuts (called "pops") are included, which have even softer shells and can be eaten in entirety. These tend to absorb more salt than the larger ones.
Uneaten peanuts should be stored in a refrigerator, as they can become slimy or moldy quite quickly without refrigeration. Boiled peanuts can be frozen, and later reheated in a microwave for out of season consumption.
Boiled peanuts can also be canned.

Raw peanuts in the shell are put in a large pot of very heavily salted water and boiled. This can be done inside on the stove or outside on a propane burner for a larger volume. Depending on the locality, some cooks use rock salt or standard table salt, or both. The boil can go on from four to seven hours or more, depending on quantity and the age of the peanut (green "raw" peanuts cook faster and tend to be better tasting), and the boilings will most often be of several gallons of water. Boiled peanuts are popular in some places where peanuts are common. Fully mature peanuts do not make good quality boiled peanuts; rather raw or "green" ones are used. "Raw" denotes peanuts in a semi-mature state, having achieved full size, but not being fully dried, as would be needed for roasting or peanut butter use. After boiling they take on a strong salty taste and become softer with the length of cooking, somewhat resembling a pea or bean, to which they are related. The most flavorful peanuts for boiling are the Valencia type. These are preferred in the United States, being grown in gardens and small patches throughout the South. Green Virginia type peanuts are also sometimes used.

Got all that? On your next trip down to our area, be sure to grab a bag and try out some boiled peanuts! You can find them at produce stands and in the grocery store!

Fried Green Tomatoes: A Garden City Beach summer staple!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1HOGs-9ucOQ/S9iGCoR8yeI/AAAAAAAAAGg/QxrU6KQ84FU/s200/green-tomatoes-m.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465265527544662498" />
Welcome to the first in the Southern Summer Recipe Series! Every week, we will be featuring a favorite recipe from one of the Garden City Realty staff, in hopes that you might be able to bring a little piece of the Beach back to your home!

Our very first recipe is a southern summer staple: the fried green tomato! For those of you unfamiliar with this delectable summer treat, here is your chance to experience it. But first, a brief note about the green tomato!

Green tomatoes or "greenies" as they're known around here, are simply unripened tomatoes of any variety. This is also why they're a summer staple: one can't get green tomatoes until tomato growing season begins in late spring and summer.

You can use any type of unripened tomato, but the larger ones, such as beefsteak and heirloom seem to work the best (plus, there's more to eat!) Now you might be asking why you can't just use regular red tomatoes, and the answer is that the regular tomatoes are simply too soft, and won't hold up to the frying process. The green tomatoes have a wonderful crunch to them, as well as a tangy sweetness that's completely different from a ripened tomato. And now, for the recipe! Serve these tomatoes outside with a glass of iced tea one summer night and enjoy the sunset with someone you love!

Southern Fried Green Tomatoes

Prep Time:
5 Min Cook Time:
15 Min Ready In:
20 Min
Servings (Help)

Original Recipe Yield 4 servings

Ingredients

4 large green tomatoes
2 eggs
1/2 cup milk
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup bread crumbs
2 teaspoons coarse kosher salt
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 quart vegetable oil for frying
Directions

Slice tomatoes 1/2 inch thick. Discard the ends.
Whisk eggs and milk together in a medium-size bowl. Scoop flour onto a plate. Mix cornmeal, bread crumbs and salt and pepper on another plate. Dip tomatoes into flour to coat. Then dip the tomatoes into milk and egg mixture. Dredge in breadcrumbs to completely coat.
In a large skillet, pour vegetable oil (enough so that there is 1/2 inch of oil in the pan) and heat over a medium heat. Place tomatoes into the frying pan in batches of 4 or 5, depending on the size of your skillet. Do not crowd the tomatoes, they should not touch each other. When the tomatoes are browned, flip and fry them on the other side. Drain them on paper towels.

There are also plenty of ways to dress these up. I like mine was a little blue cheese on top. They are also great with a sprinkle of hot sauce, and my personal favorite, some cream or marscapone cheese in between a few stacks and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Enjoy!

Note: ALWAYS be extremely careful when cooking and frying with oil. Be sure to have an extinguisher on hand, as oil can heat rapidly and catch fire if unattended or spilled.

Great weather is here! The weather is sunny and breezy, with temperatures in the mid to upper 70s. Locals and visitors alike are breaking out the bathing suits and gassing up the boats in what is predicted to be the nicest Spring the Grand Strand has seen in quite some time. If you haven't visited the beach during this time of year, then you are truly missing some a great vacation opportunity. This time of year offers great incentives, with lower rates, a vast selection of condos and homes and less traffic (ALWAYS a plus!) Plus there are a host of activities and events taking place in the upcoming weeks.

This weekend is Easter, where one of the most popular events is the Sunrise Service on the beach in Garden City at 6:45 am. Taking place 2 miles south of the Garden City Pier, this service is an absolute must for anyone who wants to experience the true majesty of a beach sunrise. Parking is extremely limited, and the service is standing room only, so be sure to get there very early to ensure a spot.

There will also be an 11am service at the Garden City Chapel, located a block west of the Pier. This too, is always a favorite of both locals and visitors, so be sure to get there early.

Happy Easter everyone, come out in play in Garden City! Stay tuned for more upcoming events and fun activities taking place in this area!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://blog.gardencityrealty.com/2010/04/spring-is-here-now-is-time-to-visit.html' title='Great weather is here! We usually get a few flurries in January or the beginning of February, but nothing more (the excited saying "I think it's sticking!" can always be heard when these flurries start). In fact the last time it snowed and stuck was January of 2000, almost exactly 10 years ago. So you can imagine our surprise and skepticism when they began calling for snow on Friday morning in the amount of 3-5 inches. Sure, we would believe it when we saw it.

HOWEVER! For once, the weather people were correct! Around 6pm on Friday, it began coming down in huge flurries. AND IT WAS STICKING! And it continued to come down all throughout Friday night and into Saturday morning. So all of us Grand Stranders awoke to a sight that hadn't greeted us in a very long time...a winter wonderland! Actual snow that you could run through, play in, throw at people and build snowmen with. And although the temp went back up to around 45 degrees by early afternoon, and every last trace of the snow was completely melted by that night, it was definitely something we'll all remember and hopefully not have to wait another 10 years for.

** Disclaimer: I am aware that to all you folks in the Northern part of the country, this paltry 3-5 inches is laughable, especially with the incapacitating amounts of horrible winter weather you have been getting. But hey, this is the BEACH. And now, we're ready for the cold to go away, everything to warm up and everyone come visit us here in Garden City and Myrtle Beach!

Garden City Realty is upgrading!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 180px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1HOGs-9ucOQ/S3RnrOaZfRI/AAAAAAAAAEw/dl2ZiQpq-SY/s320/new+roof+2+small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437084642443885842" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 172px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_1HOGs-9ucOQ/S3RnYKsuxMI/AAAAAAAAAEo/yFd6hgZKLts/s320/new+roof1+small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437084315029521602" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 241px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1HOGs-9ucOQ/S3RnPGr58DI/AAAAAAAAAEg/t02AgvI0-_U/s320/old+building+pic+small.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5437084159333494834" />
Hello everyone! It's a new year and Garden City Realty is starting this one off right. Throughout the years, Garden City Realty has undergone many different changes, but for the most part, our building has remained the same (the exterior, at least). This year, Garden City Realty has freshened things up a bit. We now have a lovely new roof in our perfect shade of blue, as well as some landscaping that features lots of South Carolina's state tree, the Palmetto. See how we've grown!

Stayed tuned for many new features and blogs from Garden City Realty. We will be discussing weekly everything from the weather and top ten things to do in the area, to recipes from the Garden City Realty family.

Best destination for coffee and art in the Myrtle Beach area!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 109px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_1HOGs-9ucOQ/SwrfGE53SSI/AAAAAAAAAEY/cdxsvJ4tj_g/s320/ebb+flow+coffee+web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5407379598100351266" />
The expresso machine steams as patrons lounge on comfy couches and chairs, sipping their java and reading, or tapping on their laptops. They are surrounded by artwork, pottery, jewelry, sculptures and a laid back, coffeehouse vibe. Does this sound like a scene out of a big city coffee shop/gallery? Think again! Right here in Murrells Inlet is a hidden treasure known as Ebb & Flow Coffee!

Ebb & Flow is more than just an art gallery. They are forum a for local expression; an informal place where you can relax, sip some great coffee, catch up on your reading, listen to good music, surf the Internet, or just hang out. They feature fresh ground locally roasted beans as well as creative espresso drinks and an array of homemade baked goods. They are also committed to a green business operation by using products that are 100% biodegradable..
Wikipedia defines Coffee houses as "centers of social interaction: [they] provide a place to congregate, talk, write, read, entertain one another, or pass the time, whether individually or in small groups." The idea for the coffeehouse evolved from the realization that the coffeehouse is a natural centerpiece for highlighting local Art & Culture. The coffee shop provides the perfect place to sit awhile and admire the skill of the artists. Relax, enjoy the art, and maybe ponder on a purchase with no pressure.
This funky coffee house offers an eclectic atmosphere to meet, chat, work and enjoy a great espresso, latte, or cappuccino. Ebb & Flow is owned and operated by Artists and is a hub for the local artists and musicians. Ebb & Flow is committed to providing Murrells Inlet with a cultural destination for everything from art, to music, to philosophy.
Ebb & Flow Art Co-op is a gallery in Murrells Inlet that boasts a hefty array of local talent. The unique art and furniture is created by established artisans that have been working in the area for years as well as some fresh new talent.
Ebb & Flow Art Cooperative is many things but mostly it is a place for the inspiration, collaboration, and expression of its members. We provide a venue for local artists to display and sell their artwork as well as a place for the local community to view and acquire what artists in there area are creating. Members work in a wide variety of mediums and styles. These mediums include everything from traditional canvas, painted furniture, driftwood art, custom furniture, wood turnings, a silversmith, beaded jewelry, carved decoys, pottery, and many more.
For those unfamiliar with the concept of a cooperative gallery, it is managed, manned and maintained by artist members who show their work, staff the gallery sales desk, and handle the display, lighting, and jury of artwork. In fact, the Garden City Beach area remains a draw for visitors throughout the year!
Temperatures are often still in the 70’s all the way up through December (we’ve definitely had our share of nice, warm Christmases!) and the nights are pleasantly cool; no snow shoveling and plugging in our cars around these parts! And this time of year offers not only less traffic and a quieter, more peaceful atmosphere, but plenty of specials and discounts are available on everything from house rates and golf to entertainment, dining and shopping in Myrtle Beach. There is also a great amount of holiday fare for the whole family. Some of the most popular Christmas shows include the Dixie Stampede Christmas Show, the Alabama Theatre and of course, the Carolina Opry Christmas Show. Holiday activities also abound at the Market Common, as well as the Palace Theatre, where this year, the 12 Irish Tenors will be performing from November until January.
For those of you looking to stay on the south end, Murrells Inlet offers activities and restaurants galore. Anyone who has vacationed or thought about vacationing in Myrtle Beach, Garden City Beach or Surfside Beach has probably heard of Murrells Inlet, the "Seafood Capital of South Carolina." Located a short 2 miles south of Garden City Beach, Murrells Inlet is a treasure trove of history, restaurants, quaint shops, and a variety of water sports and activities. Of course, being the Seafood Capital means lots of seafood, everything from fresh local fish and shrimp to steamed oysters and raw bars.
One restaurant certainly worth mentioning is Lee’s Inlet Kitchen, which has been an Inlet staple since 1948. Owned by the fourth generation of the family that originally started the place, the food is known for its quality and variety. Fried, broiled, blackened, and grilled seafood, the award winning she crab soup, and of course hushpuppies and honey butter round out the menu.
Another can’t miss feature of Murrells Inlet is the Marshwalk. The Marshwalk features 7 different restaurants with great water views, fantastic night life and live music, and on any given night there is something happening at one or more of the restaurants, particularly on the weekends. The Marshwalk is great for strolling along on a pleasant afternoon or evening and enjoying the view with a refreshing drink. Much like the variety of food the Marshwalk offers (seafood, steaks, sushi, gourmet and bistro and burgers and sandwiches, to name a few) the live music acts also vary. Some of the local favorites include Painted Man, a funk and soul group, Who Shot JR? a quirky blend of classic rock and modern classics, Act 2, a great acoustic band, Tru Sol, Ros Bonghi reggae, and Hot Sauce and Villanova, to name a few. Be sure to check the kicks section of the Sun News to see which nights the bands are playing. See you at the beach!

Review of the brand new Freestyle Music Park

On June 30th, my family and I visited the newly redone Freestyle Music Park (formerly the Hard Rock Park) in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It was to celebrate my 10 year old brother's birthday, and ironically, the only other time I have ever been was for his birthday the previous year, when it was still the Hard Rock Park; needless to say I was curious to see the improvements they had made to the new park.

The first (and rather substantial) difference is that of the admission price. You still have to pay to park, which I feel is somewhat unnecessary, but apparently most parks do this and it was only 6 dollars, so I'll let that slide. The admission price however, is vastly different. When it was still the Hard Rock Park, the biggest complaint was the admission price of $50 dollars for adults, $30 for children, which most people felt was entirely too high for what the park offered, and I agree. Paramount and Six Flag theme parks usually only charge around $25 for admission, and frankly, they offer much more than Hard Rock ever did, so the previous price was just too much, and is part of the reason the park failed. However, the group in charge of the Freestyle Music Park have wised up and are now offering adult admission for $25. They are also running specials at the end of the summer, where admission is only $17.99, which is great.

A soon as we got into the park, we headed to the left, which is a portion of the park called "Myrtle's Beach" formerly known as "Rock N Roll Heaven." The improvement alone to the archway you walk under announcing the name of the portion of the park is substantial. Rock N Roll Heaven featured a Grateful Dead theme of roses and skeletons staring down at you, whereas now it simply reads Myrtle's Beach in innocuous, bright colors. I always thought the Rock N Roll Heaven was neat, but I can see where it would not appeal to all, especially not young children.

Myrtle's Beach features a small water park, which kids will love, as well as a show about skateboarding tricks and acrobatics, a large improvement over the tired Malibu Beach Party that was there when it was Hard Rock Park. But of course, the main attraction of that area (and of the whole park) is the former Led Zeppelin roller coaster, now called "The Time Machine." The improvements to this attraction are definitely for the better. Instead of having to watch the same 10 minute introduction, featuring a montage of Led Zeppelin clips, there are music videos playing from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and 00's. And most enjoyably, you don't know which decade of music you will be listening to on the actual coaster until you are on it. This element of surprise, combined with the montage of music clips that blare forth the best hits of each decade as you ride the thundering coaster is great- we rode it 4 times and got a different decade each time. I mean, I love Led Zeppelin as much as the next person, but listening to "Whole Lotta Love" (which is the only song the coaster played previously) over and over again definitely took away from the experience. This is much better.

It's clear that the new Park has tried to focus much more on rides the whole family can enjoy. They have added a whole new section devoted entirely to childrens rides, called "Kids in America", a great improvement over the very minimal kid rides the park had before. There is a cute acrobatic show called "Flip 5 Live" that younger kids are sure to enjoy, as well as a small roller coaster, ropes course, swings and much more.

There are 2 attractions that definitely need some work. The Roundabout, a hybrid ferris wheel and roller coaster had a history of technical problems when it was Hard Rock Park and would lock down without being able to restart. Clearly the kinks haven't been worked out, because the ride locked up while we were about to get on it and they had to wait about 7 minutes for a technician to show up. The actual coaster was fun, but the technical issues made me hesitant to get back on it.

By far, the worst attraction is the "Monstars of Rock." Housed where the former "Nights in White Satin" was, this ride is truly awful, and a complete waste of time. "Nights in White Satin," based on the song by the Moody Blues, was actually a really interesting ride, with 3D psychidelic effects and cool visuals, although it was more adult than child oriented. The "Monstars of Rock" is a misguided failure. Basically, you ride through the dark and look at cardboard cutouts of "moster rock stars" on the wall. That's it. I've seen traveling 3rd rate carnivals put together better attractions. One can only hope this is temporary and that a better attraction is in the works, as the space has potential.

Overall, the park is enjoyable, and clearly steps have been taken to make it more accessible to all ages and all types of music and fun lovers. However, there's definitely that feeling of "well, we've done everthing in about 30 minutes, guess we need to start riding the same things over again." The park could do with at least one more large roller coaster like "The Time Machine" and probably at least 6 or 7 big rides to fill in the gaps. But kids will definitely like it, and it with the great specials they're offering, the Freestyle Music Park offers a nice addition to your Myrtle Beach family vacation.

Think you can't afford a Myrtle Beach vacation this year? All-day single tickets for adults will retail for $39.95. All-day single tickets for children, three through nine years of age, will retail for $29.95. Children two years of age and younger will be admitted free.

It's going to be interesting to see what changes have been made. We already know that the former "Led Zeppelin- the Ride" roller coaster (Which I can attest to is a really fun one!) has been changed to the broader named "Time Machine"and will feature a rotation of 5-8 songs from different decades. And even though I like "Whole Lotta Love", I think this is a wise decision, as it will appeal to a bigger audience, and you won't get tired of hearing the same song over and over again.

The Park’s features a new area called “Kids In America,” along with four new children’s rides, so there is bound to be plenty for the little ones, with rides, games, a dance themed area and an amazing live show called " Flip 5 Live" which consists of high energy singing, dancing and tumbling and features acrobats from the ages of 16-19. The show also encourages the participation of the kids in the audience. This is bound to be a hit for the younger crowd!

Be sure to check out the Freestyle Music Park, it can only add to your Myrtle Beach vacation!

Welcome to your Easter beach vacation!

Welcome to Exploring the Grand Strand, Garden City Realty's blog! Well for one thing, the temperature. I'm sure many of you in the northern parts of the country are sick of cold, wet weather, yes? I would be. Drag yourself away from the snow shovels, woolen mittens and coats and picture this: You and your family piling onto a golf cart and leisurely cruising down to the beach, or strolling down the pier in the sun, a gentle, salty breeze blowing as you watch fisherman reeling in shiny spot tail, eating homemade ice cream as you watch the beach kites dance over the houses. Then you sigh a sigh of contentment and think "Wow, I am SO glad we did this, this beach vacation to Garden City was a great idea!" and you wonder why you've never been here before.

Sounds nice, doesn't it!? And not only is the weather supposed to be great, but Garden City and Surfside Beaches offer plenty of Sunrise worship services on the beaches and area piers, where you can experience the sunrise over the ocean like you never have before, on Easter morning!

So what are you waiting for? Go check out the beach homes and condos for that perfect Easter week vacation. And feel free to subscribe and keep checking out this blog, where the locals will give you insight into the Grand Strand, and all that the area has to offer! Have a nice day!
