Spring Cleaning and Donating

We’ve finally made it through Winter and into a beautiful Spring. With the rising temperatures and sunny days comes all the blooming flowers and trees, and a nasty layer of pollen. If you’re ready to get started on some much-needed Spring Cleaning, you’re not alone. Here are some ways to make your house shine this season!

The most common areas to target are the dusty spots. Start by wiping down the windows, sills, and blinds. Polish wood surfaces, too.

In the kitchen, clean out your sink. Cut up some lemon, lime, or orange peels into the disposal for a quick, fresh scent. Bonus, it helps sharpen the blades! The microwave can get pretty gross too, so giving that a wipe down is a good idea. Of course, clean up countertops and surface areas. If you’re looking for more organization, rearrange the pantry or refrigerator and throw out old products.

Shake out small rugs, including the mats outside! A clean welcome mat will make you feel better each time you walk into the house. You may also want to sweep up any leaves that fall onto your walkways or porch for a fresh start.

Tackling clutter can be a big relief, plus you can donate it for someone else to use! Start with junk drawers for a smaller project. Consider donating your unused craft supplies, old CDs and movies. Clean out your bookshelves of books you don’t think you’ll read again. This makes room for your next big read! Move up to your closets and think about the clothes you haven’t worn in a while or pieces that don’t fit anymore.

If you’re up for a bigger project, start cleaning out your garage or attic spaces. These can be big ventures, so set a day or two aside so you don’t get too stressed out. If you have furniture you don’t want, think about repurposing it for a fun craft project! If you just want to get rid of it, you can schedule a pick-up with your local Goodwill. You should also try and get rid of or re-organize those extra home improvement items. Extra paint cans and duplicate tools take up space, so figuring out a good system will make a big difference.

Give your car some attention, too. Even though it isn’t a part of your home, it gets pretty dirty from pollen. Wipe down surfaces, vacuum, and hose it down. You’ll feel so much better when all your spaces are squeaky clean!

When you find yourself with some extra time on your hands, spend a portion of your day reviving your home with a much needed deep clean. Over time we find ourselves creating cluttered areas or holding onto old things that we are not sure if we will ever use again. This spring, take the step to get rid of these items and leave your home feeling spotless and like it was staged by a professional!

Consider donating to local charities and non-profits. Not only with this help you get rid of some items you no longer need, but it is a rewarding feeling knowing you contributed to helping your local community. When donating, you can go about it in two different ways. One, take some time to clean and choose items you would like to give away because you no longer need them, then find a place that is in need of those items. Or, if you would like to donate to a specific charity that is close to your heart, take some time to first research what items are needed and choose items to donate accordingly. If you have some extra money in your savings, you can use this as an opportunity to get rid of old dated items and revamp your home. Have you noticed your towels are ripping and the color is washing out? Donate them to the local humane society and buy new towels to change up the colors in your current bathroom!

Whichever non-profit you choose, it is eye-opening to experience how an item that you didn't care for makes a huge difference to someone else. Although the expression be the change you wish to see is cliche, it is true. Donating promotes generosity, motivates friends and family, and boosts your overall happiness. So the question is, which charity would you like to donate to this spring?
